I am now using StatusCake for uptime checks and monitoring, after trying it for the ContentGardening.com site.

It is super simple to get started with: setup your account for the free plan, and via the dashboard, add what they call a Test, providing at a minimum: the public URL their system will be checking, and contact details for receiving notifications.
